Single-tooth Implant Treatment Candidates

Doctors talking

A single missing tooth may result from injury, genetics, or dental problems. If the tooth is not replaced in a timely manner, it can lead to various dental problems. The surrounding teeth may begin to move into the space left by the missing tooth, affecting the alignment of the bite. In addition, the underlying jawbone may begin to degenerate because it is no longer receiving the stimulation it needs to encourage blood flow and nutrients to the area. To prevent these problems, patients should undergo treatment to fill the space left by the missing tooth. At Winterset Dental Care, we offer implant dentistry services to replace the entire tooth, from root to tip. If you are missing one tooth, we can use single-tooth implants to restore your smile. Contact our Chicago, IL practice today to find out if you are a good candidate for treatment.

Causes of a Single Missing Tooth

We see patients who have lost a single tooth due to a number of causes, including:

  • Sporting accidents: A patient may lose a tooth after suffering a blow to the face from another player, a piece of equipment, or contact with the ground.
  • Auto accidents: The high impact that results when a person is in an auto accident can result in a lost tooth
  • .Assault: It is common for a tooth to get knocked out during a fight or physical assault.
  • Tooth decay: If tooth decay goes unchecked, it can result in a large cavity and root canal infection. If the majority of the tooth’s structure is damaged by decay, it will not be strong enough to support restoration and must be extracted.
  • Gum disease: Gum disease destroys the soft tissues of the mouth, creating pockets between the roots of the teeth and the gums. As the pockets grow, the teeth become loose and may fall out or require extraction.
  • Genetics: In some patients, one or more of the permanent teeth are missing. In this case, the tooth replacement may be attached to a retainer, which is worn until the patient is old enough to undergo dental implant treatment.

Treatment for a Single Missing Tooth

If you are missing one tooth, we can place a single-tooth implant, which will anchor a crown in place to restore your dental appearance and function. First, we will surgically place the implant in your jawbone, in the socket in which the natural tooth root was located. During the next two to three months, the bone and soft tissues will grow around the implant, securely holding it in place. When this healing period is complete, we will attach an abutment to the implant. The abutment is the piece that connects the implant to the prosthetic, in this case, the dental crown. Next, the custom crown is attached to the abutment, filling in the space left by the missing tooth. This completes the treatment process, and patients can enjoy a fully restored smile that looks natural and beautiful.
