Osteonecrosis and Defibrillators

I consider these great Spelling Bee entries for school contests!  Osteonecrosis means a condition in which the bone in the jaw weakens. This leads to loose gums that don’t heal, and sometimes a numbness in the jaw. I see this most often in patients who receive or have had high-dose injections of anti-resorption medications, often due to cancer treatment.

Implantable defibrillators and pacemakers help the heart maintain the correct rhythm, when beating.  While unlikely, the electrical impulses created by ultrasonic devices that we use in treatment have the potential to create an irregular heartbeat.  Perhaps now you better understand why we ask patients to fill out, and update, their Medical History.

Contact Winterset Dental to schedule an appointment…and bring along your list of medications.  It helps up keep you safe.
